Yen Tu mountain history

More than 700 years ago, after two victorious defends against the mighty Mongolian army (1285 and 12870), King Tran Nhan Tong left the royal palace in Thang Long (Hanoi nowadays) to found Truc Lam Zen sect with a unique Buddhist culture of the Vietnamese people.

He went to Yen Tu mountain to build Yen Tu Pagoda and to lead an ascetic religious life on a day in 1299. Later, people called him “Buddhist King”. Visitors from all over the country will go to Yen Tu pagoda from the 10th of January according to the lunar calendar to attend Yen Tu festival, worship Buddha and view the spectacular scenery.

Yen Tu mountain Cultures

Yen Tu has been the center of Buddhism in Vietnam for many centuries. Every year on February 28th (January 10th in Lunar calendar), the opening ceremony of Yen Tu festival took place in Giai Oan yard, Yen Tu mountain, Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh province. Yen Tu festival is one out of several spring festival in Vietnam and it last for 3 spring months. Yen Tu mountain cable car information

Yen Tu pagoda Tips

You can either climb to the top of Yen Tu or use the cable car. The price for cable car is 280.000 VND round trip. There are some extra services like electric cars, buses, car park cost around 10.000 VND to 20.000 VND, remember to bring cash to spend because local people don’t accept credit cards.

You can complete your trip to top of Yen Tu pagoda within a day (you will have to start very early in the morning if you climb), so you don’t have to book accommodation in advance. If you want to spend a day or two to discover Uong Bi city, you should book hotels in Uong Bi city which is about 15km to the north. Uong Bi is a small peaceful city with friendly local people and a huge pagoda name Ba Vang. It is worth to spend a night there after Yen Tu.

Yen Tu pagoda is not a super popular destination to foreigner tourists, but a visit to the center of Buddhism in Vietnam will not disappointed you.

What to see at Yen Tu pagoda ?

East Yen Tu is one of the places where there are many unique architectural works mainly about Buddhist religion. Most of these places have existed since the Ly dynasty. But later to the Tran dynasty, they were renovated and converted into the most popular tourist destinations today.

This relic is located at the foot of Doc Do to the top of Yen Tu mountain, Uong Bi city and Dong Trieu commune of Quang Ninh province. This place has many typical historical monuments such as:

Suoi Tam Pagoda

This is a temple when it comes to the legend of King Tran Nhan Tong starting to Yen Tu mountain to practice. And this is a stream that the king bathed and lived on, so when it comes to this people often say that Suoi Vua Bath is called Suoi Bath for short.

Cam Thuc Pagoda

This pagoda was built in the Tran dynasty. The special feature of this temple is its location on a hill shaped like a raspberry. Through many times of cultivating, the temple gradually goes into history and when you come here you will see the antiquity of this temple.

Bi Thuong Pagoda

Giai Oan Pagoda

Lan Pagoda

Hon Ngoc Towers

What to see at Yen Tu mountain ?

Bao Sai Pagoda

Van Tieu Pagoda

Dong Pagoda

Later in the Le dynasty received the merit of Lord Trinh’s wife, this place was built into a temple with the most beautiful scenery in Yen Tu. In 2007, this temple was remodeled and completed newer.

Yen Tu National Forest

With a total area of more than 3,000 ha, Yen Tu national forest covers all Yen Tu mountain. Coming to this forest, you will experience the climate here will be divided into two regions depending on the height of the forest. BambooForest

Am Lo Ren

Heaven gate, Buddha stele

Through many geological changes, the rocks suddenly turned into natural turtles running towards the top of Yen Tu Linh Thien mountain. The features of these rocks all have snails and scallops that have gradually fossilized.

People call this the gate of the Buddha’s stele because when going up to the heaven gate there appears a stone face like a oar rising to the palace of the Buddha. People call this the Buddha Stele. In front of the rock, there is a Chinese inscription, but faded, but only one word remains.

Statue of Buddha Tran Nhan Tong

To commemorate the merits of King Tran Nhan Tong himself, the whole nation and the Dhamma have built a statue of Hoang Tran Nhan Tong Buddha. To cast this Buddha statue people use tall and large pure copper blocks. This statue is placed in an extremely fox position, 1,100 meters from the sea level.

An Ky Sinh Statue

An Ky Sinh statue is a natural stone rock shaped like a monk with respectful hands in ao dai. This place is the place to pay tribute to An Tu – a Taoist who created many remedies to cure diseases for people.
